World Mental Health Day


Is uploading two blog posts in one day a thing? Well I'm doing it anyway, and I have good reason!

Mental Health is something that is extremely close to my heart, for many reasons which I will save for later posts. Waking up on the 10th of October and checking my Twitter, I realised it was World Mental Health Day, I did an inner fist pump to myself when I saw '#WorldMentalHealthDay' was trending. It warmed my heart seeing tweets of encouragement and support for those who suffer and messages of reassurance that nobody is alone. Over the recent years, mental health has become more and more recognised, but for some people, it is still perceived as a "taboo" subject. 

My reason for writing this post is because I believe the more people that understand and raise awareness about mental health, eventually the stigma will disappear. Mental health can be perceived as an "invisible illness", but that doesn't mean it's not there. Everyone will know someone who has suffered or is suffering from mental health, whether they realise it or not. 

I am so pleased that there are many campaigns around today focused on erasing the stigma surrounding mental health and I feel that the more we talk about it, the more support those with illnesses will feel. This stigma is what prevents people from opening up about their feelings and not enabling them to get the help they need. Using phrases like "other people have it worse" is a prime example of mental health not being taken seriously, therefore contributing to the stigma. It's not ok. 

When talking to those with mental health, it is important to perhaps think before you speak, especially when it comes to reassurance. For instance, you never truly know what is running through someone's mind, therefore just ask how they are feeling, if you can do anything to help and let them know you're there. 

Did you know that addictions such as drug and alcohol abuse come under a form of mental health illness? 
Mental health can come in many forms. Some of the more common ones are anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders and depression.

If you feel like you may need help then please confide in someone, whether that is your GP, a friend or a family member, anyone. I have also compiled a list of mental health charities or organisations that you can use if you want to talk or if you just want some more information:

Remember, you are not alone, there will always be someone there to listen.

  3. Thank you for writing this post! I think you summed up the stigma around mental health very nicely, I saw a post somewhere about how saying "people have it worse" is like saying you can't be happy bc "people have it better".

  9. This is so important. I am a psychology student, so mental illness is a daily thing for me. But I hate how it is perceived in the world. In the end, our brain is just another organ in our body that can be broken just like the others. For me and my friends talking about therapists is normal but everyone else just seems to avoid that topic. We need to change that!

  10. Amazing job with writing this post, sharing information and raising the awareness. So many people suffer quietly and it shouldn't be that way. Their problems and worries must be recognised by others (and not mocked as it often happens sadly) and those who are in need must get support and help. It is so nice to know someone is ready and open to listen to you <3

  11. A brilliant post on a very important topic. Mental health illnesses are no more the sufferers fault than physical ones, in some cases less so when there are some people who refuse to look after their physical heath. It's sad that so many invisible illnesses, mental & physical don't receive the understanding they deserve from friends, family members & even doctors! Xx

  13. Ugh you're so right - people always say "I don't believe in therapy" like you can just ignore a problem and it will get better. Therapists are TRAINED PROFESSIONALS and they work wonders. You'd never go to a friend's house and hear "Yeah the toilet is broken, but I don't believe in plumbers, so let's just not talk about it and hope this shit goes away." :-( Just because "other people have it worse" is no reason NOT to get help either! Love this!

  14. Love this post esp from someone who battles not only long term physically medical condition (Crohn's Disease) but mental and learning problems as well!! Here in the US, we are fight culture stigmas in the African American communities esp the image of the "strong Black woman" and "pray it away" ( I am Christian and there is nothing wrong with prayers but even my pastors are addressing the culture stigma of not seeing a doctor or counselor for effective treatment of mental health, just like with physical).
